SingleSource Technology Basis of Business Growth Strategy
April 12, 2007
(JACKSONVILLE, FL)— Leading-edge technology is credited as the key foundational strategy helping a Jacksonville startup grow from five employees to more than 40 employees in less than three months.
Dow Capital Funding, a progressive wholesale lender with its core business technology in place, sought a cost-effective outsourced human resource solution without further investment in its infrastructure. The answer came in the form of online tools to manage people from SingleSource Services Corporation.
“There is no doubt in my mind that SingleSource’s technology and support has saved our company countless man hours required to administer a growing employee group,” said Mark Duffy, Dow Capital Funding chief operating officer. “And what’s more, the entire system, with its integrated functionality, guides us through complicated HR compliance issues.”
Dow Capital Funding employees log in through a secure portal using any standard Web browser, whether at home or in the office, to access employee programs and services including a time clock, request time off and benefit enrollment. These programs automatically link to SingleSource’s discounted payroll solution. The same system also includes applicant tracking and a pre-employment screening service performed by SingleSource staff.
“Dow Capital Funding, like SingleSource, is a technology-driven company,” said Paul M. Meese, SPHR, SingleSource vice president of client services. “We had them up and running within two weeks, clearly surpassing the industry standard of three to six months.”
Because SingleSource’s online tools are affordable, scalable and flexible, Dow Capital Funding plans to add services as needed. In the long-term, SingleSource will continue to partner with Dow Capital to establish a strategic human resources model.
“When they’ve grown enough to need an HR department, the HR director will have the appropriate systems in place in order to focus on employee development and retention activities with a relatively small administrative burden,” Meese said.
“In my mind, we found the sole-source provider for every transactional task related to HR – and believe me, we looked,” Duffy said. “As a result, we’ve completely avoided the typical obstacles experienced by growth companies like ours.”
About Dow Capital Funding: Dow Capital Funding Inc. is a progressive wholesale lender formed in 2006 by a group of individuals with banking, mortgage lending and investment backgrounds. This “next generation” mortgage company combines lending expertise with cutting edge technology to create a lithe, nimble, responsive company. The company offers a range of products, competitive rates and an intuitive customer interface. On the Web at www.dowcapfund.com.
What would your background check reveal?
By Candace Moody
Special to the Times-Union
Article copyright © The Florida Times-Union, Sunday, March 18, 2007
The barriers between what is considered “public” and “private” behavior are thinner than they’ve ever been in our culture. Companies are willing to spend resources to check up on potential employees, partly out of liability concerns, in today’s litigious environment.
They’re right to be thinking that way, according to Don Dymer, President and CEO of SingleSource Services, a Jacksonville Beach firm that offers an array of background screening and applicant testing tools for business.
Dymer, a retired Scotland Yard Inspector, founded the company in 1995. In addition to screening and drug testing, the company helps employers recruit, assess talent, process payroll, manage applicant, employee and compensation records, administer benefits and generate reports.
His experience as an investigator helps him train staff to uncover information about potential employees. Request for screening from employers may include criminal history, credit information, verification of educational and other credentials, and employer references. SingleSource never makes recommendations to the hiring company; they simply report findings. It’s up to the candidate to explain what might have turned up in a records search, if the company gives you a chance. Often, candidates are simply eliminated without ever learning the reason why.
Dymer also provides advice to companies about which screening makes the most sense in their candidate search. For instance, he doesn’t recommend a credit check for most jobs, unless the position is responsible for handling money. He doesn’t like the implications of using your credit history as insight into your character.
“The only thing your credit report says about you is how you manage money. If that’s not your job, it’s not relevant to your qualifications, he said.
Your driving record is another story, however. Dymer believes that companies should not let you drive while on the clock (even to run a quick errand) unless they know that you are responsible behind the wheel. A series of traffic violations or accidents on your record could eventually mean that the company may be liable for damages caused by your reckless driving. The other party could sue your employer if you have an accident while on work-related business. He also believes that a history of reckless driving may be an indicator that an applicant has less inclined to follow rules or consider safety procedures.
His is also a strong proponent of criminal background checks. Dymer advises companies that if they hire someone with a violent background who later commits a crime on the job, the business can incur huge damages. He believes that companies should ask about criminal records on the application.
“Not just felony convictions,” he emphasized, “but all criminal backgrounds. Many felons plead down to misdemeanors to minimize jail time, so a misdemeanor conviction can mask a serious crime.”
One of the common dilemmas faced by job seekers with a history is whether to confess up front or take your chances that your employer won’t find out. Dymer is adamant: especially on applications – never lie about it. The information is out there, and eventually, it will probably catch up with you. Most companies terminate employees on the spot for falsifying an application.
“And they should,” Dymer said. “My father taught me very early: You can sometimes trust a thief, but you can never trust a liar.”
You might consider checking your own information early in your job search to see what’s out on the Internet about you. You can “google” yourself to see if your name appears in a cursory Internet search. You may find a person in your Web search with a name similar to yours; it’s good to know, especially if he or she has an arrest record or has been posting unsavory pictures or blog entries. A future employer may mistake you for the other person, but you can be ready with proof that you’re not.
Dymer also recommends pulling your own credit report (Florida law allows you a free credit report from each major service yearly). The former detective thinks this is a good idea anyway, since it will alert you to potential fraud. Seeing in advance what an employer might see in a search helps you be ready to answer any concerns that may come up in the interview process. It will also help you maintain a calm demeanor if you have to answer tough questions.
Dymer estimates that only about 5 percent of candidates fudge their educational or employment credentials, but he’s aware that people are tempted to “enhance” their resume or experience every day. Companies like Dymer’s pride themselves on making sure employers learn the truth about potential employees.

SingleSource Forms Partnership With Omaha-based QuikServe Solutions, LLC.
September 25, 2006

Through a like-minded passion for innovation, two companies have found the connection and have combined their technology services to increase productivity and cut costs through operational efficiency.

Many employers and managers know the value of interviewing new employees once they are on the job to get a fresh perspective of the company.
However, interviewing employees who are leaving the company can often provide something even more valuable -- an honest view of the company from someone who knows it well. According to human resource experts, an exit interview can be a gold mine of information. Read more...
"Is Administrivia Keeping HR from Getting a Seat at the Table?"
By Bob McKenzie
As seen in The McKenzie Mailer
April, 2006
NOW is the time for HR professionals to move into a more strategic role. The trends in the business world are getting more complex every day. With the shortage of people and the emphasis on keeping costs down to remain competitive, the need to streamline operations has become absolutely critical to the HR profession. In the healthcare and construction industries, there is currently a critical shortage of qualified employees. All indications point to a similar shortage in just about every business segment. There are two primary ways that HR can have a major impact on organization’s ongoing growth and success. The first is to get out of the transactional role and the second is to lead efforts that attract AND retain great employees. Here are a few items that are food for thought.
The Internet’s Implications on Human Resources are Huge.
The Internet is constantly changing the way business is done. Some time ago, someone figured out that most software applications that were once installed on your computer can now be done via the internet. This has eliminated the need for constant software upgrades. Many companies now require applicants to apply through a web site or a web based application system. A web based HRIS has self service features that allow employees to change addresses, beneficiaries and complete annual open enrollment with no forms or HR involvement.
Faster! Better! Cheaper!
The continuous process improvement mantra of business seems to be incessant. But as we all know, competition dictates that things have to be done faster and better and cheaper. Those who use internet tools effectively are seeing processes being accomplished quicker with higher quality while spending less money. Those who are slow to implement and properly utilize this technology will not survive.
Think of this:
How much time do you spend screening resumes and applicants?
How much time and effort do you devote to open enrollment every year?
Do you have the time or inclination to conduct and review exit interviews?
Is administering payroll and producing countless reports the best use of your time?
How much of your budget is consumed by continually updating and upgrading your Human Resources Information System?
Would your time be better spent on enhancing your performance management system and increasing the effectiveness of your employees?
Could your time be better spent in development of employees, succession planning, compensation planning and the implementation of cultural changes necessary for your organization to succeed?
If you no longer needed to tend to “administrivia” issues, how much more valuable could you make yourself to your organization?
The human resources outsourcing business is now a $59 billion dollar industry. This is not the future – it is NOW. If you’re not on the leading edge of technology, you’ve fallen behind. NOW is the time to catch up.
