What We Learned At The Conference:

  • There are 43 million victims of child sexual abuse.
  • Abusers show up as coaches, teachers, after school volunteers, friends, family and mentors.
  • Who do the children tell? - 60% will tell no one, 40% will tell an adult, only 6% of those adults told will report the abuse to the police.
  • $1,272,000 in lifetime victim costs and $585 billion combined fatal and nonfatal child maltreatment costs in 2008 dollars.
  • In every 8th grade classroom of 32 students across America, 4 girls and 2 boys have been sexually abused and 1 boy will have already sexually abused a younger child.
  • Who is the child sexual abuser? - 70% are male, 90% are heterosexual, 93% are religious, 77% are married or formerly married, 69% are caucasian and 46% are college educated.
  • 6% of Americans have a sexual interest in children and therefore 6% of those working with youth in sports and youth serving organizations also have a sexual interest in children, i.e. the Boys & Girls Clubs of America serve 4.1 million children and have 225,000 volunteers, 6% of the volunteers = 13,500.
  • Nonprofit Volunteer Screening Practices: 12% report not screening volunteers at all.  Organizations who report screening, conduct 95% interviews, 76% reference checks, 72% background checks but only 50% conduct background checks in more than one state and the majority of organizations never re-screen.

We want to give a special thank you to Jacksonville Mayor, Alvin Brown for graciously proclaiming February as Protect the Children Month in Jacksonville.  Education Commissioner, Donnie Horner presented the proclamation at the conference on February 3, 2012.  The Jacksonville City Council by President Joost also provided resolution 2012-45-A urging public support to become informed on child sexual abuse issues.

The Diana Screen®, developed by Gene G. Abel, M.D. identifies applicants at high risk for sexually abusing the children and youth they are asked to help and protect. Joining Dr. Abel are speakers from around the nation who work with children and youths every day and see first-hand why this screening tool is so vital.

"I wanted to let you know how wonderful your service is. Recently I sent SingleSource the information from several applicants. Some of the applicants failed to disclose information that makes them ineligible for hire. Because of fear of litigation, many companies will not give references for previous employees; so I recently started using SingleSource to verify previous employment. There is a world of difference when you have that additional information to help you make personnel decisions.  SingleSource helps me make better personnel decisions, which helps our company grow and provide quality service. When I can hire with confidence, I gain peace of mind and I am able to reduce my liability."
